Freeze Frame.

With New Years Eve just around the corner, the hectic holiday season is coming to a close once again. Amidst the noise and the parties there are moments in the snow where all of the static noise of the city seems to go away. As the sun sets, the glow of the snow seems to soundproof the world and slows us down if only for a moment. Take an opportunity to be with your thoughts and reflect on the past year. Imagine your goals for the year to come, and in this moment listen only to your thoughts. This final freeze frame of the year is a time to reminisce and recount your experiences, lessons, and successes.

I am all about mixing textures, lengths, and contrasting structured pieces with laid back elements for the perfect balance. For this look, it was all about a coastal inspiration of relaxed luxe, but applied to a winter outfit with a cashmere turtleneck and camel waistcoat. Layering is a winter essential, especially when you layer your warmest wool garments. The combination of the wool waistcoat and cashmere turtleneck is the perfect city outfit, moving between indoors and out, and keeping moving.

The ripped jeans were a staple factor in achieving the perfectly undone element in this look. I love wearing a great distressed, faded pair of jeans in winter as an unexpected contrast to the usual deep blues and rich tones we often gravitate towards. It is a simple way of elevating your look, and switching it up, all while giving your favourite pair of summer denim a little bit of love and attention. Light ivory, camel, suede, and gold accessories with a washed blue denim works regardless of the season, and this winter take on a classic combination is a great go to.

Thank you for the ongoing readership, love, and support! I am wishing you all the best for a prosperous and exciting New Year in 2016!

Silver Lining.

Well, I suppose that it was bound to happen eventually… I have caught my cold of the winter. Even with a healthy diet and a positive attitude, I seem to have lost this battle (at least for now) and I will have to embrace a slower pace over the next few days. Oh well, thank goodness for planning ahead and getting a new look ready prior to being sick! There in lies the Silver Lining! ;)

I am all for mixing tones, textures, and sizes to create a great look. For this outfit I was using some simple layering techniques to embrace the warmer, almost spring-like weather that we have been experiencing this January in Alberta. Starting off, I paired a simple and relaxed faded jean and a pilled (I bought it that way – and love it) silk blend tee from Oak + Fort along with a Club Monaco cardigan for an added layer of warmth. I kept the fit looser and more relaxed, but in a way that looks effortless yet purposeful. Keeping the colors faded and pairing with black is an easy way to make a relaxed outfit look considered and balanced. All of the tones are working in sync, and there isn’t too much light or dark. From there, I Accessorized with a classic chunky black boot from Zara and minimalist Daniel Wellington watch from Harlow High street, and it all came together in the end.

Well, I think that I can hear the kettle whistling so that is my cue to brew some more hot tea and try and shake this cold off before I jet off to a warmer destination very soon! I hope everyone is staying healthy!

Heartstrings.

Well, it’s officially been almost a year since my last blog post – and what a whirlwind of a year it has been! So much has changed, and I am really so excited to be where I’m at in my life right now. I have missed creating new content, it really is a creative outlet for me and amidst a crazy work and school schedule it’s nice to find time to do something for yourself!

I’m in my fourth year of my Bachelors of Design degree (only one more to go!) and it is really strange to look back on the portfolio of work I’ve created and see how far I’ve come. I’ve also been working at a new store on The High Street which has been life changing and has brought with it a whole new family. Who says you can’t love the work you do?

I also have so much to look forward to in the coming weeks, most notably a much needed vacation over reading week! I can’t wait to be really creative, take tons of photos, and also get a tan at the same time. It’s going to be amazing!

I have been obsessed with this Club Monaco cable knit sweater lately. I love having an oversized, chunky–knit sweater to wear in the winter. The temperatures here have been so up and down – freezing cold one week, spring weather the next. I find that this is really the most essential layer, because it is so easy to add a great coat and a warm scarf for colder days, but no matter the weather it is still comfortable on it’s own. Also, I’ve been loving ivory lately, it’s really such a classic color – and one that I (surprisingly) didn’t really have a lot of in my wardrobe. That’s what initially drew me to buy this sweater, and I am so glad I did! I’ve since paired it with my distressed jeans and leather moccasins and it is the perfect outfit for cozy days!

I’m so excited to be back, and I am going to try and make more time for what I love to do, so stay tuned!

AE MAR 24 AE MAR 24 2Spring Things.

With only a few days left of cold weather in Edmonton before (hopefully) the big spring melt of 2013 will commence, I decided to post a look I put together a while back that I hadn’t posted. I went for a coffee date with the always lovely Marie Zydek (of Marie a la Mode) and we snapped these photos on a chilly, but sunny day a few days before we had our once-in-a-century blizzard.

My 21st Birthday is coming up next week (Monday, April 1st to be exact), and I am hoping that the weather network isn’t playing an April Fools joke on all of us with their forecast calling for temperatures in the positive double digits and up. I think we totally deserve the warmth and sunshine, and I think it would make for the perfect Birthday gift!

For this outfit, I wore a drape-front cardigan which is another new piece from OAK + FORT that I am absolutely in love with! It is really difficult to find a men’s drape-front cardigan that isn’t too long in the front and too short in the back, or that simply has too much bulk and fabric in general. This is the best one I’ve found yet, so I absolutely had to pick it up! I paired it with an awesome printed tank that I recently picked up at Simons and my trusty Cheap Monday jeans that have always been a go to pair for me.

Hopefully the weather will clear up soon, but nevertheless I have started building up some awesome summer playlists. I’ve recently found some amazing chill wave artists that will definitely be on repeat (videos below) in my car with the sunroof open and the sun pouring in. Now all I need is mother nature to help me out on a few of those elements and summer will be off to a great start!

Spray Art.

I recently attended an amazing street-art opening hosted by a friend and coworker of mine and her boyfriend. They work collaboratively on a lot of the pieces displayed directly on the walls (like the one I am standing in front of), but the canvases shown were all created by my friend’s very talented boyfriend. The event had a great turnout and was hosted in the basement level of the Mercer building on 104st. The art took centre stage, and the brightly-colored, cartoon-inspired canvases have already been selling out to some really excited art fans. My friend Annaliza added some flair to the already cool evening by hosting a fashion show of some outrageous cartoon-inspired looks on female models. Bright hair, colourful makeup, lots of faux fur and retro 90’s clothes. Overall, the event was so much fun and really unlike anything we usually see in Edmonton – I hope we see more events like this from this amazing power couple very soon!

For the event I chose to wear something really fun and urban, or at least as urban as I go when I get dressed up! I wore a studded denim shirt underneath a really psychedelic giraffe/camo print sweater. I paired down the look by wearing dark green pants that complimented the spots on my sweater, and brown leather boots to give just enough fun print. I really loved this look, and I enjoyed blending in with the colourful walls that were filled with art!

Happy Friday everyone and if you are in Edmonton, like me, stay warm and drive carefully through this crazy snow!

 Overcast.

I was waiting to post this look, mostly because these were my last photos to put up from Vancouver. Now that reading week is over, and classes have resumed, I am totally wishing I was back in Vancouver for a slightly extended vacation. Oh well, once things get rolling again I’ll be too stressed with due dates to dream of getting away from Edmonton.

It was a really overcast day when I shot these photos, and unlike many others, I really like rainy, cloudy days. There is no better time to stay in and get things done (napping included) than a day like that. It’s just nice how the world seems to slow down a little bit when it rains, amongst our hectic lives in the city. So, while everyone is feeling gloomy, I am feeling totally refreshed and getting ready for sunny days by being totally productive on the not-so-sunny ones.

Aurora.

This past Wednesday I attended the unveiling of “Aurora” at Simons at their West Edmonton Mall location. Aurora is a permanent art installation, designed by architect Philip Beesley, which reacts to space and motion with a mixture of technology and different materials. This installation is truly breathtaking and is a wonderful example of art that can be enjoyed by the masses – in this case, anyone who stops by Simons to catch up on some retail therapy.

As a design student, I really love the appreciation for art and design that Simons has as a company. The fact that they are so focused on their identity as a brand and their image gives me major respect for what they are doing. Making art accessible and making it a part of everything they do as a company makes Simons more than just a clothing store – it makes them a cultural hub that we so desperately need in Edmonton. They are providing a space for us to become more fashion forward, and see some amazing works of art and design that are open to their sales floor.

I attended the art opening with my gorgeous friend Alyssa, and the company definitely made the night more fun! In typical blogger style we made our way through the event snapping all sorts of photos. I eventually had to limit the photos down to a few, so I thought it was best to show what I wore that night as well as a gorgeous photo of the installation from an overhead view. Along with seeing some other Edmonton bloggers, I was thrilled to see some of my own classmates from the University of Alberta. The volunteers came from either a Visual Communications or Industrial Design background, and definitely brought a level of expertise and professionalism to the construction of Aurora. Also, what an amazing opportunity this must have been for those designers-to-be to work with such an accomplished architect!

There is an incredible sense of depth and space to the installation, which is in part due to it being hand-constructed out of various plastics, needles, syringes, glass votives, oils, lights, motion sensors, and much more. The level of fine detail and workmanship, along with the interactive, technological elements made this an unveiling to remember. Aurora truly came to life over the crowd! Even better yet, in case you think you might miss the opportunity to see Aurora in person – think again. It is a permanent installation, which they hope will be up for at least the next 10 years, so definitely take some time to go check it out if you have the chance!

Such a fun night, and I definitely can’t wait to see what’s next at Simons!

Oak + Fort

My trip to Vancouver has been absolutely amazing. Enjoying a few days out of town with some great friends was one of the best starts to my reading week – and I couldn’t be happier right now.

I am just about to get on my flight back home, and back to reality. I am making sure to enjoy the last few minutes of my Vancouver trip by sipping on a (well-deserved) Starbucks latte while I wait for my flight home to begin boarding.

I took these photos in gastown yesterday during a relaxed day of shopping. I made sure to stop by the Oak + Fort in gastown, and snagged some great accessories and an amazing new shirt that will be perfect for Spring! The sun was shining, and although it felt warmer than Edmonton, I may have overestimated the spring vibes I was getting that morning. Regardless of the chill in the air, I really enjoyed donning a lighter outfit. We are slowly inching towards Spring across Canada, and so far Vancouver has been the warmest yet!

I kept this look fairly pale, and opted to roll up my pants for a sunny, cropped look. I have been loving my new slate-blue cardigan from Club Monaco, which is brand new to their Spring collection. It was the perfect pairing with my shoes that have such fun green laces. I got some awesome new bracelets from Brandy Melville downtown that I am in love with, and thought they were a great match for my gold Michael Kors watch!  Topping it all off was an amazing anorak – which was absolutely essential given the chilly breeze breaking its way into our sunny day. It was just totally relaxed and comfortable, which was perfect for a day out shopping in such a chic neighbourhood with my close friends.

Anyways, It looks as though I am about to board my flight back to Edmonton – See you soon!

Don’t Save Me.

After a lot of hard work and many late nights, reading week is finally here! I am looking forward to having some time to relax and enjoy a few days away from my hectic school life. I will be jetting off to Vancouver early Sunday morning to meet one of my best friends, Monica. Something tells me that a perfect blend of vintage shopping and coffee dates is just what the doctor ordered!

For this look I really focused on making old-school more modern. I wore a letterman style jacket with awesome brown leather sleeves, and paired it with faded blue denim and a really sharp plaid. Because it’s still winter, I added one of my favourite pairs of brown boots and a grey infinity scarf for added warmth. Overall, I think this look will be perfect for my flight.

Also, I’ve been loving HAIM’s new song “Don’t Save Me” which I posted just below this text if you want to have a listen. With my music plugged in, a few of my favourite magazines, and my laptop handy in case I choose to be slightly more productive, the trip down is already shaping up to be pretty nice!

See you guys in Vancouver!

Love Is Blue.

While everyone was wearing pink and red tones to celebrate Valentine’s day, I chose to stick to monochromatic, denim-on-denim blue/black palette with accents of white and silver. It happened to be very cold in the city today, and I really just wanted to be warm. Also, my boots were a huge help in keeping me upright all day (instead of falling constantly). We’ve had a few days this week where the sun was out, and the snow was melting, but sadly it has all turned to ice as the temperature dropped back below zero.
