Primary.

As you may know from some of my previous outfit posts, I have been working on incorporating my new spring pieces into my existing winter wardrobe and coming up with some really great looks! I just recently bought these amazing pale blue (almost turquoise) pants and they are absolutely going to be an amazing spring essential. For now, in lieu of spring, This outfit was all about exploring and reinventing primary colours. I wanted to create an outfit with a pop of springy blue, rich red, yellow, and brown for some real depth along an age old palette. It’s not quite warm enough to dig out my pale-coloured linen shirts for summer just yet, so instead I am going to make due with these rich tones and enjoy what’s left of my chances to dress for colder weather. That said, I absolutely cannot wait until spring has finally, well, sprung in Canada – I simply choose to make the most of what I have to work with in the meantime!

Cabin Fever.

I am in a constant state of California dreaming – thinking about summer, sunshine, and bright colours! As a result of this, I have decided that I will dress to reject all things winter and cold-related (as best I can without freezing to death in the meantime). Other Canadians will totally understand this feeling of cabin fever that only sunshine and warm weather can cure. I typically start breaking out my Spring wardrobe around March 1st, depending on the weather in Edmonton at that time. This year, there was something different – I just couldn’t wait. And frankly, who says you should? I think that the best way to transition into your spring wardrobe is to start mixing those pieces into what you’ve been wearing throughout the winter season. You can get some really interesting colour combinations, it brightens up your (cold, dark) day to have a little pop of colour with your dark neutrals, and it just gives you that little dose of hope necessary to break on through into Spring!

With this outfit I ended up playing around with mixing pale, cool toned greens and blues, with small pops of yellow and red. I am in love with the new Spring shirt collection from Club Monaco, and I have been back several times picking up the amazing new arrivals. The colours, and patterns they are releasing this year are so fun and fresh it makes it hard to say no – even when you know you shouldn’t! This blue/white/red plaid is no exception, and is one of my latest favourites. What is great about these pieces is how incredibly versatile they are. I can go for a dressier look, or I can leave the shirt unbuttoned with either a tank or v-neck in the summer for a casual, beachy look. Once again, buying a well-made, and well-fitted piece is never a bad idea – but rather, a good investment!

Concrete Jungle.

This look was all about neutral tones and natural textures. Combining the warm-brown, natural fur with rich, oiled leather boots, army green pants, and an ivory henley to create something really warm and downtown-rustic. I played around with mixing warm and cool tones, gold and silver hardware, and hard vs. soft texture to make this look something urban and utterly winter. It has been in and around the range of -40C for the last few days in Edmonton, so I made sure to dress for absolute warmth – while being careful to avoid overkilling the layers once I have shed my coat for a day of classes inside of the warm studios at my school! Overall, just right!

Denim & Red Wine.

I am in love with this Italian wool sweater from Club Monaco – and I have multiple colours to prove it! I like layering a really soft piece like this warm, red sweater with a harder, more distressed piece. For the distressed element I wore a light wash denim shirt underneath that has just the right vintage look. Finishing everything up with dark denim and a great moccasin boot makes this look perfect for a day of classes. Best of all, wearing a layered look is the best way to stay warm when you’re inside and you’ve shed your heavier coats and sweaters. A great sweater, made of quality wool, also makes for an excellent investment piece. You’ll have it for years to come, and the look and feel of the material, as well as the fit, will always make you feel like a million dollars!

 Back To Fall.

With only a few days left of summer, and a few weeks of school already having passed, I find myself getting more and more excited for the weather to cool down. There is nothing like walking around campus and seeing the leaves changing color while you rush to get the all important Americano (or two) of the day. There’s also nothing like getting back to basics – which I’ve been doing with some great pants, tops, and accessories this year. Layering and combining basics is the age old way of getting a really great outfit that looks effortless and polished – and it’s easy to put together even when you face the rush for an 8am class!
