REALIST Square

The Realist.

After two amazing years of highglosswhite, I grew to learn a lot about myself, my personal style, and what really interested me that I felt I could share with the world. I felt, from the beginning, that I wanted to make my voice known, and help make fashion more accessible in my city – a place where the fashion scene is still young, but in development.

I have always had a passion for photography, and more specifically fashion photography. This lead me into creating outfit posts that I style and produce to create an editorial look out of what I choose to wear everyday. From there, I have worked on creating full seasonal photo shoots with looks that were curated by myself, with the help of many talented friends of mine. I am so proud of all of the content that I have created in the last two years as highglosswhite, but I am looking forward to an even better future with a whole new name: THE REALIST.

I wanted to come up with a name that talked about real, honest fashion. In art history terms, realist works of art are described as pieces that are shown for what they are, and that are not overly decorative, or at least not without a specific purpose for being so. While I do enjoy decoration in the form of colour, pattern, and great accessories, I always strive to make my style edited and never overdone. Editing doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, it simply means you always have just the right amount of fun. I love to play with my personal style, because I think it is one of the most amazing ways in which we can express ourselves and our individuality in the world around us. At the end of the day, I have always followed Coco Chanel’s mantra of editing your look before stepping out the door: and it always works!

I appreciate all of the love and support from everyone who reads my blog, and enjoys seeing all of my photos – there are more posts on the way, I promise! Now, here’s to a new name, a new year, and a new chapter in my life as a young person, and a blogger. I am so grateful for everyone who has, and will in future, become a part of my style journey. This blog, as well as the content I create, is something I truly love!

Simons.

Having only been open for a few weeks, Simons is quickly becoming a high-profile fashion retailer in the Edmonton market. I was invited to attend their pre-opening media preview back in October, and what I saw truly blew me away. I have been back a few times since and have a way better idea of where things are in the store, and what types of things I know I can find in their different sections. It was like being a kid in a candy store touring their 115000 sq. ft. location prior to their opening, and it left me wanting more. I have fallen in love with their more fashion-forward men’s line along with many of their Simons Maison home furnishing accessories. Clothing selection aside, it is the design of the store itself that makes it a pleasure to shop in – and this careful attention to the overall shopping experience is something that has been severely lacking in our other local, large-scale department stores. I was happy to learn that the company is still family-run and you can see the care and attention that comes from that connection that the two founding brothers have with their company. I am so thrilled that Simons has finally opened it’s doors, and I highly recommend that everyone check it out if you have the chance – especially with christmas parties and gift-giving season fast approaching! Happy shopping!

Another season of Western Canada Fashion Week is heating up, along with the weather! Before all of the shows get underway I thought it would be a good time to post my review from the incredible group of designers that took to the runway on closing night of the WCFW Fall 2011 season. (more…)
